Literature Text

Sitting here listening to the news of the day
Gas prices are up, the boss man is docking my pay
A minor set back, you say
With a tired, faded grin
Just a small hitch on our road to glory and fame

But we share an all too knowing look
A harsh understanding of failures and flaws
The consequences of lazy childhood days so far gone

And still we laugh it all away

Immaturity yet reigns here
Though we’ve long been grown
It’s our custom, our nature, our way
We never got over it, never really changed

So I take your cubic zirconium
And fashion it into shiny trinkets
To dazzle the eyes of a passer-by

While you take the feather of my useless wings
And craft them into quills
To lead astray the mind of a stranger

And we spend our Saturday nights
In a smoky little club under neon lights
Where you play the piano beautifully
For the scraps people toss in the tip jar

While I’m somewhere near by
Serving drinks to a party of five
And watching your performance
Out of the corner of my eye

I see you flash a smile
That melts their hearts so they’ll put
Something more substantial in the jar

But I’m the only one that notices
Your bitter longing for something else
And you’re the only one that detects
The resentment in my angry foot steps

At closing time, once everything is packed and put away
We walk home together in the pouring rain
Because we can’t afford gas; after all
The boss man docked my pay

Yet its fine, we’re both okay
There’s nothing we can’t weather
Except maybe this cold I mutter
It’s worse in Alaska you reply
Your lips curving up but you try to hide it

And still we laugh it all away.
this is the poem that [link] goes with. Not that great, and it still needs work.
